4-PART A CAPPELLA HARMONY

Region 21 Golden West exists to elevate 4-part a cappella harmony in the barbershop style. As a vibrant part of Sweet Adelines International, Region 21 is a leader in musical excellence and education. Our organization creates events, resources and content that helps musical leaders, choruses, quartets and singers excel.

There's a Reason They Call Us Region 21Wonderful!

In the southwestern United States, Region 21 serves as a cornerstone to Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization that exists to advance the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance. With 16 active choruses and several new choruses in the formation process, Region 21 is known for vibrant, competitive choruses that boast the highest levels of musical excellence and dynamic, award-winning quartets. Region 21 represents choruses in New Mexico, Arizona, southern California and Hawaii. The region hosts annual competitions for choruses and quartets, education events, workshops, coaching and  much more.

Four is Fab: Quartet Singing

Quartets are encouraged and celebrated in Region 21! Whether for competition, performance or practice, we see quartets as a fundamental expression of barbershop singing. Quartetting accelerates musical skills, confidence and stage presence. All of our Region 21 choruses are proud of their quartets, and many introduce younger singers to 4-part a cappella harmony through the Young Women in Harmony program. Regional and International workshops, competitions and musical education events are offered frequently in support of quartet development.

The Region 21 Chorus Experience

Singing with a Barbershop Quartet

Barbershop singing is one of the most challenging and most rewarding accomplishments of a vocal ensemble. The defining characteristic of barbershop music is "ringing chords", which is created by an acoustical effect called an overtone. Keep reading to learn more about barbershop basics, voice parts and more.

Singing in a quartet develops a higher level musical excellence and personal accountability. Since each vocal part is the sole responsibility of one singer, quartets are the threshold to next level barbershop harmonies. Many quartets engage vocal coaches to provide feedback and help the group build their vocal and performance skills.

Supporting Singers Across Four States in Perfect Harmony

Region 21 Golden West is led by a volunteer Regional Management Team. This team leads regional competition and education efforts, offers coaching and leadership development resources and supports existing and emerging choruses across four states.
